Use the Android keyboard
Dictate, translate, rewrite, switch languages and styles, and use editing tools on the Dictāta keyboard.
Updated 2026-10-06
The Dictāta keyboard works like a normal keyboard with a microphone at its center. You can type, delete and correct text by hand at any time.
Dictate
Tap the microphone to start, speak, and tap it again to finish. Punctuation and paragraphs are added automatically.
Two buttons beside the recording state help when something goes wrong:
- Cancel: stops the current transcription. Nothing is pasted.
- Regenerate: re-runs the transcription of your last dictation.
If you hide the keyboard while recording, recording continues for a limited time and then stops automatically.
Choose the dictation language
Dictāta detects the language automatically. For better accuracy you can pick a language:
- Open the language picker on the keyboard (Choose Dictation Language).
- Select a language, or choose Detect Language to return to automatic detection.
You can keep up to 5 preferred languages in Account -> Settings.
Translate while you dictate
- Tap the Translate button on the keyboard.
- Hold the space bar to choose the target language.
- Tap the microphone and speak in your own language.
The translated text is inserted into the field. AI Actions are not available while Translate mode is on.
Rewrite or explain selected text (Context Actions)
- Select text in the field.
- Tap the Context Actions (pencil) button in the top bar of the keyboard.
- Tap the microphone and say what to do, for example "make it professional", "fix grammar" or "explain me this like I'm five".
- Tap the microphone again to apply. The result replaces the selected text.
Context Actions use an AI model. In Managed mode this is Dictāta's cloud service, with Own Key it uses your OpenAI key, and in On-device mode it needs the on-device AI model.
Styles
Tap the Style button to switch the tone of your dictation: Neutral, Casual or Formal. The current style is shown briefly at the top of the keyboard.
Prompts and AI Enhancement
Tap the Prompts button to turn AI Enhancement on or off and choose the active prompt. Manage your own prompts in the Prompts tab of the app. See Prompts, Library and History.
Fix a misheard word
Select a word in the field, then use the dictionary button:
- Add to glossary: teaches Dictāta the correct spelling.
- Create replacement: dictate the correct word and Dictāta saves a rule that swaps the misheard word.
Editing tools
- Undo and Redo buttons.
- Clipboard history: your recent transcriptions. You can paste, delete or regenerate each phrase.
- Emoji picker.
- Number pad.
- Auto-capitalization, Shift and Caps Lock.
Keyboard layouts
Dictāta includes English QWERTY, German QWERTZ, French AZERTY, Spanish, Nordic and Russian Cyrillic layouts.
- Open the Account tab and tap Settings.
- In Keyboard Layouts, choose a Primary keyboard.
- Optionally choose a Secondary keyboard. Swipe the space bar to switch between them.
Appearance
Account -> Settings -> Appearance lets you choose System, Light or Dark. The Dictāta keyboard follows this setting.
You can also change the interface language of the app there.
