Automatic language detection

Dictāta supports automatic recognition in 60+ languages. You can switch languages between dictations without manually changing the input language each time.

Language availability and recognition quality depend on your selected provider or model. The Expected languages control shows which hints are available for the active provider.

Expected languages on Mac and Windows

Expected languages are optional hints for recognition, not a translation destination.

1. Open Settings → Basic → Expected languages.
2. Choose up to five languages you regularly speak or switch between.
3. Keep the list focused on the languages you actually use. Adding too many can make similar languages harder to distinguish.

If detection is working well, you can leave the list empty. A relevant hint may help with accents, names, and words shared by closely related languages; it does not guarantee every transcription will be correct.

Examples of supported languages

English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Dutch, Polish, and Japanese are among the supported languages.

For proper nouns and technical terms, add the desired spellings to Glossary rather than filling the language list with unrelated languages.

Output in another language

To write in a different language from the one you speak, choose a target language with Translation. Selecting Expected languages alone does not translate your output. The globe button on the floating mic button is the translation selector, not the Expected languages list; see Floating mic button.
