In positive psychology, a flow state, also known as 'being in the zone,' is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus and enjoyment. Flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does, often resulting in a loss of the sense of time. To achieve flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and the skill of the performer. When these are aligned, self-consciousness disappears and performance peaks. Research shows that frequent flow states are correlated with higher creativity and life satisfaction.
